Designing an interactive smart waste bin

We present results of our research on an interactive smart waste bin, as part of a smart city concept. Waste management and waste collection are one of the fundamental parts of a smart city. We divide three types of the smart waste bin to meet the needs ofthree separated domains. In the first type there is a waste bin for city operators as well as garbage collecting facilities that use professional solutions. In the second type, there is waste bin for personal use in people houses or apartments. In the third type, there is are waste bin to be used in public places, usually indoors, to motivate people to take better care of their environment. As even a most sophisticated solution does not provide any value if not being actually used. We examine the current principles and tools used to efficiently motivate people to use smart waste bins use in order to take a better care of our environment. One of the most often used principles is gamification, which is based on the rules of serious games to motivate people. We also considered the fact that devices can negatively affect people’s privacy or may induce a feeling that people will be replaced by technology. The presented design if an interactive waste bin is believed to offer a good user experience with waste and to be convenient for everyday use.
